Hearing aid maintenance & care

To ensure you maximise the life of your hearing aid it is important to care for & maintain it properly. When you are fitted with your hearing aid, your Audiologist will provide you with written information and cleaning tools to assist you in keeping your aid working well. The following tips will also ensure a long life for your aid.

  • Clean the aid daily using a soft cloth and the cleaning tools provided paying particular attention to the microphone & receiver. If either of these become blocked the sound cannot get through.
  • Ensure you use the wax protection system fitted to your aid. Each custom in the ear aid has a wax protection system fitted to the receiver and which, depending on the type will require periodic changing. If you are not sure how to do this give us a call or bring it into the clinic and we will do it for you.
  • If you wear a behind the ear instrument, remove the earmould at least once a week and clean it in warm soapy water. Ensure it is fully dry before attaching it to the hearing aid.
  • Do not put your hearing aids any where near water.
  • Avoid storing them in direct sunlight or heat.
  • If you are wearing them in very hot climates or perspire a lot invest in some silica gel crystals to store the aid in to extract any moisture.
  • Keep them away from little people or animals who may take a fancy to them.
  • Get the aids put on your home contents insurance policy so that if they get lost, you are covered for replacements.
  • Visit us annually so we can clean and check the aid for you.
